For the newly initiated digital independence day (short: di.day) during the 39c3 talk "Die Känguru-Rebellion: Digital Independence Day" by Mark-Uwe Kling. This blog post is list of Apps that I use and and find good.
F-Droid
F-Droid is an alternative app-store to the google Play-Store that only contains apps that respects the user. They also have to be fully free and open-source.
F-Droid comes preinstalled on my microG for lineageOs device. However, it can also be installed on regular android devices. The benefit of the preinstalled version is that auto-update of apps installed via the F-Droid store also works.
Most Apps I use are in the regular F-Droid store, some apps are only on the IzzyOnDroid F-Droid Repository and for the Tor Browser the Guardian Project.
Apps from F-Droid:
- Fennec with uBlock Origin.
- Tor Browser for private browsing
- Metrolist: Music App allowing based on YouTube Music allowing to cache/download albums and songs
- NewPipe (Tubular): YouTube frontend without ads. Allows to download videos and audio
- Loop Habit Tracker: To track long-term habits
- Cirrus: Weather App (this one is changing constantly)
- Bitwarden: Password manager. Self-hosted with vaultwarden
- OsmAnd~: Maps for offline routing (I've heard that CoMaps is more user friendly). Based on OpenStreetMap data. I also use it for modifying some opening hours
- Element: I prefer using Signal, because everything is end-to-end encrypted there, but I also use Element
- Thunderbird (formerly known as K-9 Mail)
- Nextcloud: File synchronization to my file server + InstantUpload of images
- DAVx5: Contact and Calendar synchronization with Nextcloud server
- Transportr: Navigatior for public transport. Öffi is also great.
- OSS Document Scanner: Scanning of documents
- StreetComplete: Quest based, gamified editing of OpenStreetMap
- Vespucci: More advanced editing of OpenStreetMap data.
- VLC, MPV: Music/Video player for local files
- Termux, BusyBox, Markor: To SSH to a few servers and have a local copy of git repositories
- Games:
- Simon Tatham's Puzzles: 40 single-player logic games
- Shattered Pixel Dungeon: A roguelike game based on Pixel Dungeon
- Feudal Tactics: Strategy game with countless unique and challenging levels
- Robozzle: Robot programming game (unfortunately the server is down and games don't load)
- Rocks 'n' Diamonds: Arcade style game
- Shelter: To isolate some more untrusted apps into the work profile
- Aurora Store: To install some Apps from Play-Store
- Zapp: Collection of German public broadcasting live streams
From Play store:
The first one of this list is open source and I would be happy to also use from F-Droid if it were available. And the two remaining ones don't have good alternatives that I'm aware of.
- Signal: Secure messenger. Preferred app for Instant Messaging.
- DB Navigator: Tickets for traveling with Deutsche Bahn
- Rail Planner: Tickets for traveling long-distance in EU
